Chapter 9

Can't Catch Him

Joe's brain went into overdrive. He knew if he continued on course, he'd smash into the steel crossroads. If he turned left or right, he'd collide with the pilings.

There was only one choice. With a kamikaze scream, he leapt off the back of the Jet Ski. He hit the water with a smack, only five feet away from the third piling. As he came up for air, he saw the Jet Ski plow into the steel crossbars and flip up into the air.

Quickly, he dove underwater and swam down as far as he could go. He covered his head with his hands and hoped the Jet Ski wouldn't land on him. A moment later, he heard the dull sound of the engine running underwater, but the noise was off to his right. Relieved, Joe swam to the surface and took a deep gulp of air.

The Jet Ski was floating on its side a few yards away. Joe treaded water and glanced around. He saw Frank barreling across the bay toward him. Behind him, the other actors had turned around and were heading back to shore. On the beach, Lenny Wiseman was rushing around in an obvious state of panic.

"Are you all right?" Frank called. He cut the engine and cruised up beside Joe.

"A little waterlogged, but otherwise okay," Joe replied, swimming over to Frank's Jet Ski.

"Looks like our saboteur struck again," Frank said with a frown. He steered his Jet Ski closer to Joe, who hopped aboard behind Frank. Then Frank cruised over to where Joe's Jet Ski lay, still running, on its side. "Let's haul your Jet Ski in with us and take a look at it."

As Frank got nearer to the floating Jet Ski, Joe saw something move under the pier. "Hold on," he said, pointing. "What's that?"

Frank glided to a stop and looked. He saw a half-submerged figure in a black hooded wet suit, clinging to one of the pilings. The person was holding something in his hand.

"Hey!" Joe cried out. "Let's get him," Joe urged his brother.

As soon as Joe called out to him, the stranger in the black wet suit let go of the piling and scrambled onto a blue Jet Ski that was tied up next to him. He started the engine and disappeared out the other side of the pier.

"Hang on, Joe," Frank warned, opening the throttle. Joe wrapped his arms around his brother's waist as Frank steered the Jet Ski under the pier and blasted out the other side.

"There he goes!" Joe cried, pointing toward the stranger, who was roaring away from the pier at top speed.

Frank pushed the Jet Ski as hard as it would go, but the stranger had a healthy one-hundred-yard lead.

When the driver stole a glance over his shoulder, Joe tried to get a
